To compare two distinct variables in a single chart, use our dual-axis charts. These charts feature two Y axes, allowing you to combine columns and lines.
Infogram has four multiple axes charts: a column & line chart, a chart with two lines, a grouped column & line chart, as well as a stacked column & line chart. The first two and the latter two have slight variations in data input methods, explained below.
Column & line chart and dual-line chart
Both of these dual-axis charts are great if you have just two different variables that you'd like to compare in one chart.
Adding data
- To access the data spreadsheet, double-click on the chart or select Edit data in the settings panel on the right.
- For accurate data visualization in these charts, input your time series in the first column of the spreadsheet, data for the first Y-axis (left side) in the second column, and data for the second Y-axis (right side) in the third column.
Grouped column & line chart and stacked column & line chart
With these two charts, you can go a step further by visualizing your data in sub-categories and adding multiple data series to each Y-axis.
Here's a quick explanation of the two charts:
- A grouped column chart lets you compare groups of categories, with each column representing a sub-group—they're a good choice if you have multiple categories and variables.
- With the stacked column chart, each column is split into several sections, each one representing a separate category. For example, when comparing annual revenue by country, each country is "stacked" into each column representing the year.
Adding data
- To access the data spreadsheet, double-click on the chart or select Edit data in the settings panel on the right.
- Add the main groups in the first column while adding the indicators of each sub-group in the remaining columns.
Showing values
In combined charts, you can choose to show values only on the line or the columns, or both.
- To enable showing chart values, expand the Chart properties tab and enable Show column values and/or Show line values.
- To change the value alignment in columns, expand the Fonts tab, click on Advanced settings, and use the buttons below the Values font settings to place values at the bottom, middle, or top of the column, or outside the column (except for stacked).
- Change the color of the values in the Color tab.
